Midnight Sun, released on 7.22.12, is B2ST’s 5th mini-album.
「별 헤는 밤 (The Night I Count the Stars)」 starts off with a soft piano chord before the acoustic comes in and the boys harmonize together as they sing, “lalalala~” The electronica and synthesizer then come in for a louder instrumental as the boys come in with strong vocals. I think the instrumental is overpowering them, however. The one part I do like is Jun Hyung’s rap though because it’s very clear and nicely done without an overpowering instrumental over his vocals.
Some heavy synthesizer begins 「아름다운 밤이야 (Beautiful Night)」 before Hyunseung comes in with bright vocals along with a busy instrumental. Yoseob and the others then come in before going into the first verse full of autotune. Straight off the bat I don’t really like the song; seems like a nice dance song possibly but the composition feels really messy.
An exotic instrumentation begins 「내가 아니야 (Not Me)」 before percussion/electronica brings the beat into the first verse as each member sings their solo lines. The chorus’ tone isn’t much different from the verses as they go, “It’s not me, it really wasn’t me”. Jun Hyung’s rap comes after before going into a quick second verse then back into the chorus. It’s not that impressive a song.
「니가 보고 싶어지면 (When I Miss You)」 slows things down with an acoustic guitar ballad coupled with some percussion for a steady beat. The boys sing in low, melancholic vocals but in the chorus their vocals become more powerful and full of emotion. Jun Hyung’s rap fits in nicely since it sounds more like he’s singing than actual rapping and it doesn’t stand out too much from the mood of the song.
「니가 쉬는 날 (The Day You Rest)」 takes more of a funky jazz song tone with its guitar and percussion as the boys sing with a bright, excited tone to their vocals. It maintains the same mood throughout the whole song and it’s a nice song to listen to from the members.
Ending the mini-album is 「Dream Girl」, starting with some guitar beats coupled with the sounds of the street and a full band then comes in later once the members begin singing. As usual, in the chorus one member is singing most of the chorus as the other members provide some harmonization as backup vocals. Jun Hyung’s rap also fits flawlessly into this song as they aren’t stark raps but they blend in naturally with the flow of the music.
Not exactly very impressed with this mini-album; I don’t really like Beautiful Night or Not Me and listening to their performances, I couldn’t even really tell them apart even when I was actually paying attention to the performance xD. They have similar chorus lyrics too. The one song I do like is When I Miss You.
