Still Alive (Special Edition), released on 6.3.12, is the repackage/special edition of their album ALIVE. There are only 3 new songs on this edition and 2 Korean versions of their Japanese songs.
「STILL ALIVE」 is the first new song. It starts off with an electronica instrumental as G-Dragon says, “I’m still alive, I’m still alive,” before it goes into the starting chorus where they sing the lyrics very quickly. TOP then comes in with his rap before Taeyang and Daesung come in for a midtempo bridge before going back into the quick paced chorus. This time, G-Dragon comes in with a rap with back up from TOP. It’s an interesting song and it creates the mood of the album immediately, though after a while, GD saying “I’m still alive” got annoying.
Their title song and second new song, 「MONSTER」, begins with a melancholic orchestra as TOP whispers his rap. G-Dragon comes next, half-whispering, half not. TOP and G-Dragon then alternate between raps as a constant percussion beat creates the beat as synthesizer and electronica later come in. Taeyang comes in after for the bridge, before finally in the chorus Daesung and Seungri sings, “I love you, baby, I’m not a monster.” I actually really don’t like the chorus, I feel like it’s completely different from the verses and it stands out too much as a result (like the entire mood is thrown off by the chorus). The ending when GD (?) whispers, “Sick, I think I’m sick” is kinda weird, too.
「FEELING」 is the Korean version of their Japanese song of the same name. An energetic percussion beat starts up this song as G-Dragon goes, “Yeah! Big Bang” with TOP giving some back up. TOP and G-Dragon go into an energetic cheer (mainly GD) before TOP goes into his own solo rap. A distant harmonization gradually increases in volume before Daesung goes all out near the end of the song followed by Taeyang and the return of the back up vocals. GD ends things off with a rap before another member ends things off in shouty fashion (dunno if it was still GD or someone else).
「FANTASTIC BABY」, 「BAD BOY」, and 「BLUE」 are still the same songs from the original mini-album.
「빙글빙글 (Round and Round)」 is this mini-album’s last new song. The percussions start off the song and the guitar come in as soon as Taeyang comes in for the first verse. GD then comes in with a rap which leads into the chorus as Taeyang/Daesung/Seungri sing with the inclusion of some more instruments. The instrumentation this time is more of a laidback rock song. GD has a little monologue, “Can I be the one, girl? I should be the one,” before going into the next verse which Daesung leads. TOP comes in with a rap bridge this time. TOP does the monologue (“Can I be the one, girl? I should be the one,”) also.
「EGO」 is the Korean version of their Japanese song of the same name. An acoustic guitar instrumental starts off the song sweetly as GD says, “I know she get my ego” (I’m not sure if it’s “get”, I couldn’t hear him very well) before going into half rap/half singing as clapping and the synthesizer comes in. Taeyang then comes in for a short verse before finally going into a completely different chorus as the boys sing in high pitched vocals with a sharp electronica instrumentation. There’s something completely strange about this song, especially with the extreme bipolarness of the verses compared to the chorus.
Ending the mini-album is 「사랑 먼지 (Special Edition Ver.) (Love Dust)」 pretty much the same as it was in the original mini-album. The song file says this is a special edition version, but I can’t particularly find any differences (if any).
Pretty standard BIGBANG style if you ask me (the new songs, that is). If not for the chorus, I would’ve liked Monster a lot. Also, the Monster MV is nice to laugh at (mostly Taeyang’s hair and GD’s wig. I mean, seriously?)
