Face Down, released on 5.09.12, is Arashi’s 38th single. Face Down was used as the theme song for the drama Kagi no Kakatta Heya, which member Ohno Satoshi stars in.
「Face Down」 starts off as a slightly dark techno beat with synthesizer and electronica brightening things up a little. The boys are dynamic in the way they introduce lines, going “DOUshite (emphasizing the first syllable of the word)” The chorus is not much different from the verses, but slightly more energetic and bright. By the third verse, a weird instrumental filling it in followed by Sakurai’s weird autotuned rap (still not much of a fan of his raps). What is usually characteristic of drama theme songs is that the member that is staring in the drama usually as a line that stands out that they sing themselves (ala Love So Sweet, truth, Beautiful Days, etc), but in this one they don’t have it.
A twinkling keyboard and chime instrumental start off 「ひとりじゃないさ (Hitori Janai sa)」 followed by an energetic orchestra. Aiba comes in first very quietly, but he soon ups the volume. The chorus is classic Johnnys with the members all harmonizing together. It’s nothing really special, just Arashi’s usual stuff.
The single ends with 「目指した未来へ (Mezashita Mirai e)」, with an upbeat guitar and percussion instrumental, which slows down a bit and replaces the electric guitar with a bit of acoustic guitar instead once the members come in with their lines. It’s another classic Arashi song.
A PV was made for Face Down. It’s basically just the members sitting down in a nice red room in comfy chairs while they lipsync. There are a few scenes where they play around in a mirror room with furry walls, but no dancing or anything. Just standing and singing and flailing of the arms.
Not really that impressed with this single. Face Down is nice, a bit of a mix of dark ala truth or Monster but with a bright, upbeat sound to it as well. The other two tracks are classic Arashi songs, so nothing too different or special there. (sorry for a lackluster post, feeling a little sick).
