Ear Fun, released on 3.26.12, is CN BLUE’s 4th mini-album.
「Hey You」, the title song, is a simple rock song with a light electric guitar as Yonghwa’s vocals go smoothly with the music. Jonghyun comes in during the bridge, effortlessly bringing the verse and chorus together nicely as Yonghwa comes back for the chorus with a strong band instrumental backing him. There’s something about the way they’re singing that I really love; the chorus has Yonghwa singing, “Goodbye darling, hey you, oh my darling, hey you,”
Jonghyun’s vocals start up 「아직 사랑한다 (Still in Love)」 before Yonghwa comes in for a short verse before Jonghyun comes back in with the same lyrics from the beginning, “still in love love love, I want your love,” Yonghwa comes in strongly in the chorus with a melancholic guitar instrumental.
「Dream Boy」 has Yonghwa and Jonghyun sing-whispering, quickly going into a fast paced instrumental for the chorus. The verse instrumental is subtle with its soft percussion and acoustic guitar while the chorus is energizes the song with its quick electric guitar and cymbals clashing from the percussion.
「Rock n’ Roll」 speeds things up with some classic, bright guitar chords. Yonghwa sings with energy as Jonghyun follows the mood with the bridge. The chorus actually has Yonghwa and Jonghyun almost pulling a duet, which is nice to hear! This typically isn’t the type of song you’d think of when you think “rock n’ roll”, but it’s light and fun.
A continuous percussion beat drives 「Run」 as Yonghwa hotly whispers into the song with light additions from the keyboard (?). When Jonghyun comes in, guitars begin to come in, giving the instrumental a fuller sound. The chorus speeds up as the percussion and guitar comes in at full force with Yonghwa quickly going through, almost as if on adrenaline.
Wrapping things up is 「In My Head」, the Korean version of their 4th Japanese single A-side. It’s an upbeat rock song as “In my head, I love you” echoing in a busy instrumental. Once we get to the first verse, Yonghwa sings very clearly with a sort of “beat” (like the sound from stereos?) playing along with a more subdued rock instrumental. The chorus belongs solely to Yonghwa as he sings “In my head” over and over again with the return of the heavier rock instrumental. It’s a nice touch when in the third verse right before the final chorus, Jonghyun is the one singing, “In my head” instead.
Nothing less than what I expected from CN BLUE. Hey You is just a tad disappointing, there’s just something about it that’s missing/makes it empty. But I’m loving the other songs a lot; it’s mostly the tiny little details that might put you off of some songs, but overall the composition and singing is done really nicely. Also love how Jonghyun is getting just a little bit more singing parts.
