Sherlock, released on 3.19.12, is SHINee’s 4th mini-album.
「Sherlock.셜록 (Clue+Note)」 starts off with a mysterious orchestra before the electronica beats in as Minho whispers, “SHINee’s back…” Jonghyun starts off with strong vocals followed by Onew and Taemin. The instrumental is repetitive with the electronica before the synthesizer comes in in the chorus as they sing, “I’m so curious, yeah~” The second verse is fairly short, only having Minho and Key rapping before they go right back into the chorus.
「Clue」 is basically the first part of Sherlock (the entire first verse) minus the chorus because then it goes straight into Minho’s rap instead. The instrumental is still the same as Sherlock, but once we get past Minho’s rap, it’s all originally in Clue. There’s no chorus in this song. In the third verse, things go quiet as snaps and whispering can be heard before Jonghyun spices things up with some ad-libs. After the third verse, it returns to what we find in Sherlock (the third verse + Key’s rap). It ends right after Key’s rap.
「Note」 is the synthesizer part of Sherlock, along with the part where it says “Now we introduce SHINee!”. It starts right away with Key’s rap (the one found in Sherlock) and the following vocals after which are found in Sherlock. The chorus in Sherlock is taken from the chorus in Note (“I’m so curious, yeah~”) plus Minho and Key’s rap that comes directly after it. The instrumental is a mix of synthesizer and light electronica.
Okay, enough of the title tracks; Next up is 「알람시계 (Alarm Clock)」 which has a light orchestra and flutes/clarinets (?) going down the scale. Some percussion comes in as well as the boys come in with nonchalant vocals. The chorus has the boys harmonizing with each other for a simple, but short chorus. After a while, the flute scaling gets a little irritating, but thankfully its only once in a while that it pops up in the song again.
「The Reason」 starts off with some melancholic guitar chords as Onew (?) comes in first followed by Jonghyun then Taemin, Key as they sing in slightly husky vocals. Onew comes back in for the bridge, singing strongly as it goes into the chorus, where they harmonize and a light, but thankfully not distracting synthesizer comes in.
「낯선자 (Stranger)」 goes straight into a busy electronica/synthesizer instrumental as Jonghyun goes in with a strong, continuous starting verse. The first verse has Key (?) autotuned before Taemin and Onew come in not autotuned. I actually like the chorus as the best part of this song since it’s a strong, harmonizing section. The other parts of the song are a bit messy imho.
Ending the mini-album nicely is 「늘 그자리에 (Honesty)」 with a light, acoustic guitar instrumental. Taemin starts off with sweet vocals and Jonghyun follows with the same sweetness in his vocals. It’s an overall very laidback, but sweet song. I would do with Minho’s rap, but it goes in nicely enough since he sings in a low key to blend in better with the mood of the song.
I’m not really all that fond of Sherlock (the choreography makes me lol, but it is well executed) but I really enjoy The Reason and Honesty. This mini-album seems to be full of more heavy, busy instrumentals which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the way they were done in a couple songs weren’t really to my liking.
