THE B1A4 Ⅰ [IGNITION], released on 3.14.12, is B1A4’s 1st album.
「Baby I’m Sorry」 really doesn’t make sense. It’s a full heavy electronica song coupled with a bit of percussion. Baro starts off with a rap before it goes into the first verse that is overlaced with autotune. The bridge is full of autotune as well as they sing, “I just want to be your love,” before going into an extremely busy instrumental singing, “Baby, I’m sorry, bring out the better” (I don’t even know what they’re supposed to be saying with that line). I really don’t like this song, even if it is catchy. Sorry Jinyoung (he wrote this), this is a complete miss.
「This Time is Over」 starts immediately with a piano instrumental as a voice sings, “I love you and I need you” before going into the starting chorus complete with orchestra, guitar, and percussion as the boys harmonize together. It’s followed by Baro’s rap which makes up most of the first verse before the other boys come in to sing their part.
「So Fine」 starts with a delicate harp (?) instrumental before a synthesizer and electronica come in. They start with whispering, “So fine” in the background, before going into the first verse as they sing that same phrase again and again as they most likely describe a girl about being so fine. Baro’s rap comes right after before they go into the chorus, which is pretty much like the verses since they’re singing “So fine” over and over again. The overall sound of the song (instrumental) is pretty nice and somewhat innocent sounding, but I can’t help but this is boring. I couldn’t really keep myself concentrated on listening to the song.
Next up is 「Super Sonic」 which has a repetitive electronica/keyboard instrumental followed by a heavily heavily autotuned first verse before a rap comes in. The chorus is also heavily autotuned.
「둘만 있으면 (feat. Min) (Just Two of Us)」 is Baro’s solo. It has a pretty piano and distant orchestra instrumental. Baro’s rap takes the verses while Min sings the chorus, which is a pretty standard structure. Baro does some “singing” in the chorus as well after Min’s part but it’s nothing really that impressive. Min does some ad-libs every so often during the verses as well.
「웃어봐 (Smile)」 starts off with the piano and a static-y sound accompanies it along with some guitar. The boys sing with a slight slow, melancholicness to their vocals, matching the mood of the instrumental. The chorus brightens things up as the boys (can’t tell whose leading in the chorus) provides strong vocals while lengthening out his notes just a bit.
「Feeling」 is driven by its electronica instrumental as the boys once again use autotune. Synthesizer comes in later in the first verse as they put off the autotune for a bit before they use it again in the chorus, which gets really busy as a whole bunch of sounds come in. Later, the song totally becomes a party song (like it wasn’t any obvious from the chorus lol) as chanting comes in, bringing up the energetic mood of the song.
「짝사랑 (Crush)」 is Sandeul’s solo. It’s a lovely piano ballad with only Sandeul’s slightly hoarse vocals singing in a slow pace (a little bit slower than mid-tempo).
「You Are My Girl」 is a bit weird at first as it goes into a full light techno-ish instrumental with electronica and synthesizer coupled with dialogue in the background. The song is really quick paced as they sing, “girl I want you faster faster” during the chorus and the overall beat is really driven from the instrumental.
The album ends with 「Wonderful Tonight (Unplugged Remix)」 which is the same song from their it B1A4 mini-album, this time the acoustic version. This version seems more relaxed but there is still a slightly energeticness in their vocals, especially in the chorus.
I’m not impressed with this album. Although I give props to Jinyoung for continuing to write songs, Baby I’m Sorry was really bad. The combination of the busy instrumental and lyrics… just no. I did like Smile and the unplugged remix of Wonderful Tonight though.
