ALIVE, released on 2.29.12, is Big Bang’s 5th mini-album.
「INTRO (ALIVE)」 starts off the mini-album with some quick lyrics and a electronica instrumental. Definitely the line to take from this is, “I’m still alive!” which G-Dragon says again over and over. It ends with TOP saying, “We’re living that good life!”
With a soft electronica, piano, and guitar instrumental, 「BLUE」 is a slowish R&B song as the boys “whisper” as they sing for a melancholic feeling. G-Dragon has his own rap part right after the beginning chorus but it fits in pretty nicely. Daesung comes in after with strong vocals that lead into the chorus where all of the guys harmonize together. “I’m singing my blues,” is what G-Dragon sings over and over again but it really drives the message into the song and I love it. It’s a very melancholic song but I find the composition done really really nicely.
“Love, love, change, love, hate, love, dust,” is what starts up 「사랑먼지 (Love Dust)」 in a somewhat energetic synthesizer-electronica instrumental. The guys sing with an echo to their vocals as Taeyang starts, followed by Daesung, then who I am assuming is Seungri. The chorus brings in the synthesizer full force as the boys keep bouncing lines off each other. TOP has a rap verse right after the first chorus followed by G-Dragon doing a mix of singing and rapping.
「BAD BOY」 starts with “Uh, baby come back,” and quick-paced lyrics as G-Dragon takes charge of the first verse. Daesung then follows in the orchestra-percussion instrumental before G-Dragon takes the lead again in the chorus as he raps, “Sorry, I’m a bad boy, you’re a good,” and Taeyang follows as he sings, “Baby don’t leave me, I know you still love me.” TOP does some singing too! Right after the first chorus though he goes right into a rap after that.
Beginning with a very heavy synthesizer, 「FANTASTIC BABY」 starts off with G-Dragon introducing the song before Taeyang comes into the first verse along with the repetitive synthesizer. A phrase goes, “Wow, how fantastic baby,” before it goes into a full techno instrumental.
「재미없어 (Not Fun)」 has a light repetitive electronica instrumental as the guys sing in higher pitches. Their vocals sound a little bored, but that’s the point because the song is called Not Fun. The chorus even has them repeating the title over and over again.
Lastly, the mini-album ends with 「날개 (Wings)」, which is Daesung’s solo. It has a repetitive, but strong band with some orchestra (?) instrumentation as Daesung sings with his best. Clap synthesizers soon come in before he goes into the chorus with lots of confidence and strength in his vocals as the guitars go all out.
After what happened recently concerning G-Dragon and Daesung, I think that this is a very strong album. I especially really love BLUE. I’m still not sold on the other songs yet, but this is definitely a great collection of songs.
