Lucky, released on 10.11.11, is Kim Hyun Joong’s 2nd mini-album.
「Do You Like That」 was used in the teaser for the album and it’s a heavy autotuned and electric guitar song. It’s similar in mood and tune to Lucky Guy, so it serves as a nice opening song before going into Lucky Guy.
I don’t know why, but I’m reminded of Grease when I listen to 「Lucky Guy」. There is a bit of an echo as he walks into the police station (as you can see in the MV), as he asks, “Are you ready? One two three, LET’S GO!” It’s a fun, energetic song and it’s filled with traditional electric guitar, strangely video game songs (reminding me of Mario) and clapping sounds. I love how happy go-lucky it is and I think it’d be a really great song to dance to. Plus, the dance looks like lots of fun.
「웃어요 (Smile)」 starts off with some sweet acoustic guitar and bubbly sounds as Hyun Joong whispers to us to listen. The verse is well-paced as he sings with a sweetness to his vocals, going into a higher, breathier range in the chorus. It’s a short, but terribly cute song.
Another sweet song is 「나는 네 남자야 (I’m Your Guy)」 with a piano ballad instrumental that is slightly quick paced to match with Hyun Joong’s soothing vocals. It’s a pretty basic ballad, but it’s really pretty.
Ending the mini-album is 「U」, ala a male chorus in the beginning before Hyun Joong comes in along with the garage drums and the piano backing his vocals. His vocals are a bit breathy and the instrumental does tend to overpower his vocals, especially once what sounds like the lower scale of the piano comes in.
The best part of this mini-album is definitely Lucky Guy. I LOVE LOVE it a lot, it’s such a fun and energetic song. Much better than Break Down which was bleh. The other songs on the mini-album are also pretty well done, so it’s more on how his vocals sounds that really determine how good the song is.
