TURN ME ON, released on 9.27.11, is Kim Kyu Jong’s (SS501) 1st mini-album. He’s also the last one in the group to have a solo release.
Starting up the mini-album is 「NO MORE YES」, a heavy electronica and techno-ish instrumental with autotune vocals. Kyu Jong starts off with husky autotuned vocals. I was expecting more “oompf” in the chorus, but it kinda just… went into the chorus without much of a dramatic change in mood or busy-ness. By the ending, he just keeps repeating “No more yes” again and again.
I love 「YESTERDAY (부제? 어제보다 슬픈 오늘…)」. It has this sort of European-like sound to it and its immensely mesmerizing once it gets to the chorus. The instrumental is a mix of garage drum and piano while Kyu Jong starts off with low, husky vocals. The chorus’ instrumental becomes more busy and I love the sound of it. It just attracts your attention to it so much, almost like a spell, as you listen to Kyu Jong sing in a high key.
「My Love (feat. 허영생; Heo Young Saeng)」 is a club instrumental with the funkiness that reminds me a bit of the 80s or something like that. The chorus is a bit more upbeat as he calls out to his “love” with guys yelling “eh!” Young Saeng comes in in the third verse with autotune vocals and he’s… rapping. What. This song is okay, but it felt a bit messy in the vocal composition. (The “eh!”s always seem to irritate me whenever they’re in a song).
A piano solo starts off 「Get Ya’ Love」 with some electronica as he sings, “I wanna get ya’ love~” repetitively as an introduction to the song. The verses are quieter as Kyu Jong sings with an innocentness to his vocals.
「Get Ya’ Love (Acoustic ver.)」 is the same as the song before, just in an acoustic version with a hand drum and fingersnaps ala Green Peas style. I actually like this one better and it makes Kyu Jong’s vocals and the song all the more sweeter.
The song is mostly upbeat club songs or dance songs, whatever it is, but my favorites has to be Yesterday and Get Ya’ Love in its acoustic version.
